MEDIEVAL CASTLE UNDER CONSTRUCTION IN BOONE COUNTY

Workers have come from as far away as France to create a 13th century castle from stone quarried on site near Lead Hill (above). The project also includes a cedar Motte & Bailey keep, a blacksmith’s shop and a “squirrel cage” or medieval crane (right). On the front, Franck Falgairette, a stone cutter from France, shapes a block of sandstone.

None of the ordinary construction noises echo through the trees. Instead, the rugged Ozark landscape is quiet - with the exception of trilling birds, buzzing bees, fluttering butterflies and the shouts of workers chipping and fitting stones, hammering iron and encouraging a horse on its daily rounds. It’s an idyllic setting, perfect for a fairy tale. All Cinderella has to do is wait for her castle to be completed. That will take a while. The Ozark Medieval Fortress, being built outside Lead Hill in Boone County, is on a 20-year plan. Ground was broken in June 2009, and by mid-April, the castle walls were about 3 feet tall.
