ADVERTORIAL — The Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce introduced a new program named the GreeNWAy Initiative in early 2010 and in just one short month, 5 local businesses in Fayetteville have become GreeNWAy certified. Clubhaus Fitness, The Salon Professionals, Courtyard by Marriott of Fayetteville, City of Fayetteville Administration Building and Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce are certified and are doing business the “green way.”

The GreeNWAy committee partnered with the City of Fayetteville, the University of Arkansas Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE), the University of Arkansas Applied Sustainability Center, and other leaders to develop the certification process.

The goal of the GreeNWAy Initiative is to recognize businesses for their sustainability processes and to promote environmental awareness. Using “green” business procedures can result in monetary savings, making the certification a desirable achievement. The program objectives provide affordable sustainability expertise and support local businesses so that they may flourish in a green economy. The program is applicable to any business regardless of size.

The University of Arkansas SIFE group is the team who audits a business using a scorecard that covers six categories: water, waste, energy, people, purchasing and education. A standardized baseline score must be met for a business to be eligible. This independent audit is the difference between the GreeNWAy Initiative and other similar programs by giving validity to the criteria. If the business meets all criteria for the program, it becomes a GreeNWAy certified business.

The City of Fayetteville celebrates and promotes best practices for green sustainable actions in business and everyday life, and this Chamber program will assist its members to stand out in that environment and receive public recognition for their commitment and actions to promote green practices.

GreeNWAy certified businesses are listed in a specialized category on the Chamber website. In addition to a special Ribbon Cutting, the Chamber also awards a plaque and window decal for the GreeNWAy designation.
