The State Review Board of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program will decide Wednesday whether to nominate the world’s second-tallest statue of Jesus Christ to the National Register of Historic Places.
The Christ of the Ozarks statue, on Magnetic Mountain west of Eureka Springs, is 67 feet tall, second only to the 100-foot-tall Christ the Redeemer statue near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The arms of the Eureka Springs statue are spread 65feet wide, from fingertip to fingertip. The statue is made of 24 layers of white mortar on a steel frame and weighs more than 1,000 tons.
The statue was designed by Emmet Sullivan, an apprentice to Gutzon Borglum, sculptor of the Shrine of Democracy on Mount Rushmore.
