After a consultation with City Attorney Burt Brooks, Acting Mayor Tuohey yesterday morning informed the local officials of the Iron Mountain railway that they would not be permitted to lay water pipes across the streets that intersect the right of way of the Valley division along the river front.

50 YEARS AGO Sept. 30, 1959

For the first time in the two-year-old Little Rock school integration case, the federal government will not be represented by its attorneys when Federal Judge John E. Miller hears another motion in the case tomorrow in Fort Smith. U.S. Atty.

Osro Cobb has told Judge Miller that he is "personally convinced" the Little Rock board is acting in good faith under court orders and the pupil placement law, and does not feel it is necessary to have attorneys at tomorrow's hearing.

25 YEARS AGO Sept. 30, 1984 WASHINGTON - Arkansas officials, already f ighting a systemwide cost equalization plan for Middle South Utilities Inc., have encountered another such challenge that could raise electric rates considerably in the western part of the state. Brownsville, Texas, utility officials have asked the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to order companies which are part of Central and Southwest Services Inc. to share costs for generating plants.

10 YEARS AGO Sept. 30, 1999 Feuding among farmers over a plan to use the White River for a massive irrigation project has prompted U.S. lawmakers to delay funding for the $270 million endeavor. A petition drive to persuade Grand Prairie farmers to unite behind the plan and create the White River Irrigation District has stalled in recent months. In response, a congressional committee decided Monday to put the brakes on $13.9 million in promised funding for next year.
