Recount boosts votes against millage

— There were more Fayetteville School District residents that voted against the proposed millage increase than originally reported, according to the final tally of votes certified by the Washington County Election Commission.

The final result of the Sept. 15 election included 6,382 votes against the proposed increase, or about 63.5 percent, and 3,672 votes for the increase, or 36.5 percent.

The results were certified Friday.

The original estimate was 5,954 votes againstthe increase, or 59.3 percent, and 4,085 for it.

Election commission Chairman John Logan Burrow said the discrepancy stemmed from a problem with the ballots used during the early voting period.

The ballot problem was discovered on election night when the machineshowed possible problems with 229 ballots. Those were recounted that night.

"We had a problem with the early voting ballots, but the machines counted the votes in the field accurately," Burrow said. "We regret that there was ever any problem with this."
