Best-selling author James Patterson will appear at two Northwest Arkansas events benefiting the Rogers Public Library.

Patterson is best-known for the Women's Murder Club series and the Alex Cross mysteries.

On Friday, Patterson will host a creative writing workshop for students and teachers from Benton County high schools. Workshop guests are selected from a writing competition.

Patterson will speak at a breakfast event at 9 a.m. Saturday at the John Q. Hammons Center in Rogers.

Tickets are $50 and include a copy of Alex Cross's Trial, which was released Aug. 24. Seating is limited to 600 people.

Patterson will sign copies of the book after breakfast.

He also will be at Sam's Club in Bentonville Saturday afternoon to sign copies.

Clear Creek Farm Equine Rescue will hold a ride/walk event as part of the National Rescue Ride at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area's Hidden Diversity Trail near Rogers.

Riders will have a chance to win nearly $2,000 in prize money. Guests should bring a sack lunch.

Registration is $20 per horse. Registration is available online at nationalrescueride.org or Saturday starting at 8 a.m.

The 2009 Northwest Arkansas Tour de Cure/Step Out Walk, a fundraiser for the American Diabetes Association, is 7 a.m. Saturday at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale.

The event includes 20-mile, 50-mile and 100-mile bike rides as well as a half-marathon and a three-mile walk. A family health festival is also planned.

Registration is $15 for riding and running events. The three-mile walk is free.
