Fayetteville celebrating homecoming this week

— Homecoming festivities, including a parade and other events, will precede Fayetteville High School's home football game Friday evening against Springdale High School.

During the week, the school is having a spirit week with different dress-up days, FHS guidance counselor Lesli Zeagler said.

On Thursday, this year's Fayetteville Schools Hall of Honor inductees will speak to the senior class in two different assemblies starting at 9 a.m. and 10:25 a.m. Two assemblies are needed because of the small size of the auditorium, Zeagler said.

The nominees this year are Mary Ann Greenwood, a founding member of the Fayetteville Public Education Foundation, and former students Greg Lee, Class of 1965, and Frank Sharp, Class of 1956. They will be inducted during a ceremony Thursday evening at the Fayetteville Town Center.

The Fayetteville High School homecoming parade will begin at 3 p.m. Friday. Participants will proceed from the school to the Fayetteville Square, wherea pep rally will be held on the south side.

The formal coronation will be held during the football game's pre-game ceremonies, which start at 7 p.m., Zeagler said.

The school has already announced its homecoming court:

◊Queen, Emily Bishop.

◊Maid of honor, Madeline Whitaker.

◊First maid, Cambry Knies.

◊Second maid, Savannah Swaffar.

◊Third maid, Cynthia Swaffar.

In conjunction with homecoming week, the school is also holding Project Ignition Driver Safety Week.

The activities will include a Seat Belt Safety Day at the school Wednesday, service learning teacher Connie Crisp said. Students will set up a booth during lunch to encourage safe driving practices.

"It's a crazy week to do it, but we wanted to do it before homecoming," Crisp said.

They also plan to show some videos on the danger of texting while driving and will put up posters today about new driving laws. The new state ban on texting while driving goes into effect Thursday.
