— 100 YEARS AGO Sept. 28, 1909 PINE BLUFF - Hardly a property owner of any importance in this county was overlooked by the Jefferson County Equalization Board, which recently filed its final report with County Clerk J.H. Shelby and which shows an increase of assessments of real and personal property in this county of nearly a half million dollars, which is in addition to a million dollar increase made previously by Assesor L. T. Sallee.

50 YEARS AGO Sept. 28, 1959

Final preparations are being made this week for the 20th edition of the Arkansas Livestock Exposition which will get underway October 5 and run through October 10 at the livestock show grounds here. All indications point to the 1959 exposition as being the largest in the history of the state show.

25 YEARS AGO Sept. 28, 1984 WASHINGTON - Not all lands included in the Arkansas wilderness legislation, recently agreed upon by the state's congressmen, will be totally protected from oil exploration or motor vehicles, although most will. The bill, which would set aside 91,000 acres in the Ozark and Ouachita National Forests as wilderness, still includes land for which various companies have obtained oil and gas leases that must still be honored, said aides to Sen. Dale Bumpers and Rep. Beryl Anthony, both D-Ark., who negotiated the bill.

10 YEARS AGO Sept. 28, 1999

Nine proposed constitutional amendments, including a taxpayers' bill of rights, are so ambiguous that ballot titles cannot be certified for them, state Attorney General Mark Pryor said Monday. Six of the proposals were submitted by attorney Oscar Stilley of Fort Smith, who represents Arkansas Taxpayers Rights Association, which proposed an amendment in 1998 to abolish property taxes. Stilley said he plans to rewrite his proposals and resubmit them to Pryor's office within 15 days.
