Driving code three in an ambulance means a patient needs medical attention as quickly as possible. Even with lights and siren in full operation the trip from the station to the patient and then onto the hospital isn't any easy task.

At every street intersection an accident could be waiting to happen if motorists are not alert to oncoming emergency vehicle traffic.

Many times an ambulance can be in route to a patient in need, with lights and siren visible from a distance of over two blocks to waiting motorists at a traffic light, and not be noticed.

Still yet, a few will try to beat the ambulance to the corner so they would not have to stop. More times than you would think motorists nearly collide with the sides of the ambulance as it creeps through the middle of an intersection.

A high regard for another person's life is one of the driving forces that keep emergency workers on the job. If the general public would share some of that compassion it would make being in a public service capacity much more enjoyable and a little safer.

During this past reporting week alone 58 calls were for medical emergencies. Not all were code three responses, but inside the ambulance was a person in need of assistance. Please watch for emergency lights, listen for sirens and pay attention to conditions outside of your own vehicle.

You share the world with a lot of other people.
