Essay contest open to children

— The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program and Radio Disney are inviting Arkansas students to enter the annual "A Historic Moment in Arkansas" essay invitational.

Students in two age brackets - fourth and fifth grades and sixth and seventh grades - may submit 500-word essays on any historic Arkansas property that is 50 years old or older. Essays should include information on the property's history, when and why it was built and its current function. Students should site at least one reference source.

Entries will be judged on content, spelling, grammar and references. Radio Disney will present one winner in each age bracket with an 8G Apple iPod Nano, and interviews with the winners will be broadcast on Radio Disney during December on "A Historic Moment in Arkansas."

Entries can be mailed to Radio Disney, 415 N. McKinley St., Suite 610, Little Rock, AR 72205; and will be accepted through Nov. 1.

Invitational to benefit pastoral institute

The first annual Physician SpecialTee Golf Invitational will be held Oct. 5 at the Springdale Country Club. The tournament benefits Northwest Arkansas Clinical Pastoral Education Institute Inc.

Registration is $100 per person or $400 per four-person team. Hole sponsorships are also available for $100 (Bronze),$250 (Silver) and $500 (Gold).

Northwest Arkansas Clinical Pastoral Education Institute Inc. is dedicated to training chaplains and providing chaplain coverage for Northwest Health System patients, family members, staff and physicians. Chaplains will be instructed on how to provide pastoral presence to those in crisis.

Kickball tournament to benefit senior center

Mitchusson Park in Huntsville will host its first annual kickball tournament to benefit Madison County Senior Activity Center on Nov. 7 from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. People 14 years and older are encouraged to enter by Nov. 4. Entry fee is $100.

Each team is guaranteed two games. Games last 55 minutes.

First place team will be awarded plaques and shirts. Second and third place will also be awarded shirts.

Rodeo of the Ozarks gains national attention

The Rodeo of the Ozarks has been nominated for Rodeo of the Year by members of the Professional Cowboys Association.

The winner will be announced in December during the PRCA Convention in Las Vegas. The Rodeo of the Ozarks held each summer in Springdale will vie for the top spot against Cheyenne, Wyo.; Pendleton, Ore.; Reno, Nev.; and Salinas, Calif.

Rodeo of the Ozarks Vice President and Show Co-Chairman Rick Culver said the boardis very pleased with the news.

"It is a great honor to even be nominated for this award," he said. "We are proud that the Rodeo of the Ozarks has once again been recognized as one of the top rodeos in the PRCA. This says a lot for our area, our sponsors and the hundreds of volunteers that make this event possible each year."

The 66th Annual Rodeo of the Ozarks will be held at Parsons Stadium in Springdale on June 30 - July 3. Two weeks of activities including parades,barbecues, street dances, stagecoach rides and activities for all ages lead up to the four days of rodeo each year providing entertainment for thousands from Northwest Arkansas and across the country.

Dance to benefit MS research

A "Dancing for MS" benefit to raise money for multiple sclerosis research will take place from 7 p.m. to midnight Oct. 9 at Arkansas Dance Connection, 180 Industrial Circle East in Springdale.

The event includes a dance lesson, swing dance competition, door prizes and wine and cheese. Attire is "after five," meaning no jeans. Cost is $25/ adults, $40/couples and $10/ students with ID.
