NORTHERN LIGHTS Models, mutts mobilize for shelter, spay project

— The lovely seldom go home lonely, particularly when the pick-up artist is a homeless pet.

Sarah Hickam found love in a small black wirehaired dog she was already calling "Lulu" at the Sept. 18 Strut for a Mutt beauty and fashion show, held at Savor restaurant.

"She's an affenpinscher," her friend Mirelle Pierini said. "At least partly."

Hickam and Pierini turned out to support Project Lovely's third annual benefit for the Fayetteville Animal Shelter and Spay Arkansas. Project Lovely was created by Jade Terminella of Lola Boutique and Juliette Sherin of Luxe to raise awareness of and funds for the two organizations.Their goal is to educate the public on the importance of spaying and neutering pets, as well as animal adoption.

Guests mingled - some of them with their furry friends close by - as they waited in line at the outdoor bar and checked out T-shirts, dog-shaped soaps and plush dog handbags for sale by B Styled. Sugarbears had a display of Halloween costumes for dogs, as well as doggie wine and other luxuries for pampered pooches.

The fashion show featured models parading fall's hot fashions and nearly a dozen dogs, including a medium-size brown-and-white one that sat on his haunches and refused to strut. The model eventually gave up, handed the leash to someone else and continued her elegant saunter down the runway.

Afterward, the crowdstreamed inside the restaurant for a buffet of salads, large prawns, sauteed salmon, tri-tip steak or dore chicken, along with plenty of savory sides and several cakes to choose from fordessert. VIPs were privy to their own bar and had makeup done by a makeup artist. Celebrity disc jockey Samantha Ronson provided tunes for the after-party.
