Almost two dozen bikes stolen at UA

University of Arkansas police are investigating a rash of bicycle thefts on campus.

UA Police Lt. Matt Mills said police have received 21 theft reports since classes started in mid-August.

"It's not happening in any specific location," he said. "Several areas have been hit. We have some areas that are covered by cameras, so we're trying to review some of that video if it's available. We're also taking steps from the patrol side to increase our presence in those areas."

Mills said both locked and unsecured bikes have been targeted.

Investigators didn't have any suspect information as of Tuesday evening.

In addition to securing bikes with locks or chains, bicycle owners can avoid being targeted for theft by registering their bikes through the UA.

The transit and parking department will offer bicycle registration from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. yearround at the Administrative Services Building and from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. at the parking office in the Harmon Avenue Parking Facility. Both offices are open Monday through Friday. Bikes can also be registered online at parking.uark.edu/531. php. Permits can be mailed or picked up at the transit and parking department.

Bicycle registration is also available noon to 6 p.m. Tuesdays to Thursdays at the Outdoor Connection Center, located in HPER building Room 102.

"In general, we do see more bicycle thefts around this time of year because people see it as a targeted opportunity, especially if bikes are left unlocked," Mills said. "We're also seeing an elevated number because more people are riding their bikes now since it's a cheaper and easier way to get around."Clever Rogues Theatre to put on shows
