Personal space

— Sandy Newberg

Where I live: My husband, Dick, and I have lived in the Pulaski Heights neighborhood of Little Rock for 24 years.

Occupation: I am a retired public school counselor. Today, I enjoy spending my time as an artist and community volunteer. I rock babies at Arkansas Children's Hospital and I am the art chairman for the Central Arkansas Heart Ball, to be held in February 2010.

My favorite space: My studio.

Why? This is where I spend my time and I love it. I have a phone nearby and plenty of music.

It's everything I need.

This space is a modified attic that has grown over time as I have taken in closet space to make it bigger. I am in here every day and sometimes I come here intending to spend five minutes and end up staying for hours.

Three of my grandchildren often join me in the studio to paint. They are all very creative and love this space. They lie on the floor and paint, and many of their artworks are displayed on my walls.

If I could do one thing to improve this space, I would: Make it bigger and raise the ceiling.
