GOLF ROUNDUP: Britain and Ireland up by match over Europe

— Britain and Ireland led 3-2 over Continental Europe after Thursday's opening fourballs of the Vivendi Trophy, a match play event on the PGA European Tour.

Captained by three-time Ryder Cup winner Paul Mc-Ginley, Britain and Ireland had leads of 2-0 and 3-1 but Continental Europe rallied each time at the Saint-Nomla-Breteche Golf Club on the outskirts of Paris.

England's Anthony Wall and Chris Wood scored the first point by beating Sweden's Henrik Stenson and Robert Karlsson 6 and 5.

Northern Ireland's Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy beat Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark and Alvaro Quiros of Spain 4 and 3.

Anders Hansen of Denmark and Francesco Molinari of Italy narrowed the gap by downing England's Robert Rock and Steve Webster 4 and 3.

England's Simon Dyson and Oliver Wilson then won 3 and 2 against Soren Hansen of Denmark and Peter Hanson of Sweden.

However, Spain's Miguel-Angel Jimenez and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano came from two holes down to win 2 and 1 against England's Ross Fisher and Nick Dougherty.

LPGA Gustafson leads

DANVILLE, Calif. - Sophie Gustafson shot a 7-under-par 65 to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the CVS/pharmacy LPGA Challenge.

Gustafson, the Swede who won the last of her four career LPGA Tour victories in 2003, had eight birdies and a bogey.

Sophia Sheridan, playing in her third tour event of the year, matched Angela Stanford and Na Ri Kim at 67. Top-ranked Lorena Ochoa had five consecutive birdies in a 68 that left her three strokes back along with 2006 winner Karrie Webb, Shanshan Feng and Kyeong Bae.

Stacy Lewis (Arkansas Razorbacks) shot a 1-under 71 with three birdies and two bogeys. Audra Burks (Little Rock) shot a par 72 with three birdies and three bogeys. Stacy Prammanasudh (Conway) shot a 3-over 75 with three birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey.

Jiyai Shin opened with a72. She has a tour-high three victories, leads the player of the year and rookie of the year points races and also tops the money list.

Defending champion In-Kyung Kim shot a 73.

Casie Cathrea, a 13-year-old playing on a sponsor exemption after winning a qualifier Monday, made a hole in one on the 155-yard 12th and finished with a 74.

NATIONWIDE Three share lead

MIDLAND, Texas - Garrett Willis, Fran Quinn and Rhein Gibson each shot an 8-under-par 64 for a two-stroke lead after the first round of the WNB Golf Classic.

Brendan Steele, Bob May, Marco Dawson, Paul Stankowski, David Hearn and Faban Gomez each shot a 66.

Craig Lile (Arkansas Razorbacks) shot a 4-under 68 with four birdies. Scott Gardiner (Farmington) shot a 2-under 70 with two eagles and two bogeys. Ron Whittaker (Little Rock) shot a par 72 with four birdies and four bogeys. Brenden Pappas (Razorbacks) shot a par 72 with three birdies and three bogeys. Drew Laning (Little Rock) shot a 2-over 74 with three birdies and five bogeys.
