Look away, look away, Dixieland

— Old times there are not forgotten. Snaking up narrow old state Highway 13 a few Saturdays back on the way to 'umphrey, winding our way past the little yards that come right up to the roadway, there it was: a scene out of the old, storybook South.

Two formidable black ladies in bright pastels were conversing by the side of the road, about Bible verses nodoubt. The grace note was the cane fishing rod one had on her shoulder. The other had her head down, surely in deference to the older woman. Lawd, it took us back.

Having passed the ladies, we glanced through the rear-view mirror and realized that the one with her head down was checking her text messages.
