FAYETTEVILLE - Richard O. "Dick" Miles, 82, of Fayetteville, Ark., passed away Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009, in Fayetteville, Ark. He was a retired petroleum landman. He had worked for Gulf Oil Co., Fort Smith Gas Co., Arkansas-Louisiana GasCo., Stephens Production, and Hanna Oil and Gas, to name a few. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, Fort Smith Association of Landmen, Pajaro Gun Club, lifetime member of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, VFW Post 8532 in Coal Hill, Ark., the Airborne Static Line, and he was a Mason. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict where he served in the 10th Airborne Ranger Company.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, at Edwards Funeral Home chapel with burial at National Cemetery with military honors under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith, Ark.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, the Honorable Jo Ellen Carson and Douglas M. Carson of Fort Smith, Ark.; son and daughter-in-law, Lt. Col. Richard O. Miles Jr., USMC, and Linda Wadler of McLean, Va.; stepsons, Gary Miles and Nathan Miles of Lake Charles, La.; stepsisters, Charlene Giben and Mildred Williams of Shawnee, Okla.; stepbrothers, Charles Miles Jr. of Tulsa, Okla., Jeff Miles of Jay, Okla. and John Miles of West Allis, Wis.; grandchildren, Hadley Hindmarsh of Rogers, Ark., Adam Carson of Fort Smith, Ark., Quinn Carson of Boston, Mass., and Jessica Miles and Bo Miles of McLean,Va.; and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be his son, stepsons and grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the 10th Airborne Ranger Company.

MAUMELLE -Paul Y. "Woody" Griffin III, 57, of Maumelle passed away Sept. 21, 2009. Born April 22, 1952, in Fayetteville, Ark., to Paul Y. Griffin Jr. and Margrett Baker Griffin, he was a member of Christ the King CatholicChurch.

He is survived by his wife, Judith Allison Griffin; his parents; brothers, Gary Griffin (Joy) and Tim Griffin, both of Little Rock; sister, Gaye Griffin Stark of Heber Springs; aunt, Ethel Griffin Curry (Tom); mother-in-law, Janet M. Allison of Melbourne, Fla.; brothers-in-law, Mark H. Allison Jr. (Kelly) of Melbourne, Bruce J. Allison (Roberta) of Paris, Ky., and Scott G. Allison (Rebecca) of San Antonio, Texas; and nieces and nephews, Ashley, Chase, Tyler, Ryan, Matthew, Katherine, Joseph and Josie. Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Paul Y. and Bessie Griffin Sr., and L.O. and Esther Baker; and father-inlaw, Mark H. Allison.

Visitation will be Thursday evening, Sept. 24, from 5-7 p.m., followed by a vigil service at Little Rock Funeral Home, 8801 Knoedl Court (Northwest corner Interstate 630 and Barrow Road), Little Rock. The funeral Mass will be said on Friday, Sept. 25, at 10:30 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 4000 N. Rodney Parham, Little Rock, Msgr. Francis Malone, celebrant. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park.

SULPHUR SPRINGS - Jerry Charles Smith, 67, of Sulphur Springs, died Monday, Sept. 21, 2009. He was born on Nov. 17, 1941, in Beedeville, Ark., to the late J.C. and Louise Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Linda Bennett Smith; a son, Jerry Charles Smith, Jr. and wife Debbie of Hernando, Miss.; a daughter, Christi Robertson and husband Jim of Kingman, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Jamie and Jessica Robertson of Kingman, Ariz.; a sister, Hettie Lou Martin of Judsonia; and two brothers, Billy Troy Smith of Eudora and Kent Smith of Searcy.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, Beedeville Church of Christ, with burial at Eight Mile Cemetery, Beedeville. Visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 24, from 6-8 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home, Bald Knob.
