FAYETTEVILLE — Deborah Berke, whose architectural vision is described as "the philosophy of the everyday," will deliver the Ernie Jacks Distinguished Lecture for the Fay Jones School of Architecture at 5:30 p.m. today in the Shollmeyer Lecture Hall in Vol Walker Hall. The public is invited.
The Ernie Jacks Distinguished lecture is sponsored by Witsell Evans Rasco Architects of Little Rock.
Berke, a fellow of the American Institute of Architects and an accredited professional in energy and environmental design, founded Deborah Berke & Partners Architects in 1982; the firm has grown from a small staff to a group of more than 30 architects, designers, and technical and administrative staff, with projects throughout the United States, aswell as in the Caribbean, Europe and Asia. Her architectural philosophy has earned her an international reputation for creating "buildings that have presence and character - that rely on a discourse between a subtle hand and bold composition to become arresting architecture."
Berke is a professor of architectural design at Yale University, a post held since 1987. She has degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design and the City University of New York.
She is the co-editor, with Steven Harris, of The Architecture of the Everyday, published by Princeton Architectural Press in 1997. In the fall of 2008, Yale University Press published a book focusing on her firm's work - the first book on a contemporary American architect to be published by this esteemed academic press.
