BETWEEN the heavy rain showers, the womenfolk brought the potato salad and baked beans into the community center. A few men milled around outside, watching the catfish and hushpuppies fry. It was a typical September Saturday in Arkansas at a typical fundraiser for a typical volunteer fire department.
