FAYETTEVILLE School district voters said no Tuesday to the proposal to build a new Fayetteville High School by adopting a 4.9-mill increase in local property taxes.
In unofficial results released Tuesday evening, the question of issuing up to $115.8 million in bonds supported by the tax increase was decided by 10,039 voters who split on the measure this way:
For 4,085.
Against 5,954.
The Fayetteville School Board in June set the election for a decision on the proposal to build an almost all-new facility on top of the current location on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. As outlined in a master plan developed through a public charette process, the new high school design featured a building designed to house up to 3,000 students broken up into 500-student "small learning centers." The plan also featured a new performance hall, all-new classrooms, an arboretum within a secure interior court, a new multipurpose arena for sports and school gatherings, and a large cafeteria.
