LITTLE ROCK DEAR REV. GRAHAM: What makes us different from the animals? My science teacher says we really aren't any different, except that we have mental abilities that other animals don't have. I don't think he believes in God.
- C.L.
DEAR C.L.: On the surface you might be tempted to think your science teacher is right. After all,we have bodies just like other creatures do, and physically we share much in common with some of them. The Bible says God formed us "from the dust of the ground and breathed into (our) nostrils the breath of life" (Genesis 2:7).
You don't have just a body and a mind; you also have a soul - and that is what separates you from every other creature on this earth. What is your soul? Your soul is that part of you which can know God and enter into a personal relationship with Him. It's that part of you which enables you to lift up your heart to Him and thank Him for His goodness and kindness.
This is why we're unique, and why human life has dignity and importance. We aren't just animals - so we shouldn't act like animals! The Bible says that God made man "a little lower than the angels, and ... crowned him with glory and honor" (Psalm 8:5, KJV).
