BACK IN the early 1980s, just about the only Soviet exports of consequence were its talented artists. Ballet companies and symphonies all over Europe and America thrived on Russian emigres. Russian literature blossomed first in secret and then outside the Soviet Union as writers like Nobel laureates Alexander Solzhenitsyn and Boris Pasternak were published in the West.
