UA worker arrested in dorm attack

Posted: September 8, 2009 at 4:12 p.m.

— Authorities have charged a University of Arkansas maintenance employee with rape after a student told police she was attacked in her dorm room.

University police Lt. Gary Crain said Tuesday that 38-year-old Avery Scott worked in university housing.

A police report says the alleged victim had been drinking at a party and didn't remember leaving. She told officers she woke up in her room at 3 a.m. Friday while being sexually assaulted.

Police say Scott acknowledged having sex with the student but said it was consensual.

Scott called officers at 1:30 a.m. to report a drunk woman, and an officer helped her to her dorm. Scott claimed that 45 minutes later the woman asked him to help her to her room.
