'Death panels' aren't new In 1987, my mother underwent invasive surgery to diagnose a spot on her lung. She had to stay hospitalized because her blood pressure wouldn't return to normal. Then she learned she would have to leave or pay out of pocket to continue hospitalization. Neither Medicare nor her private insurance would approve a continued stay.
