New chips speed medical scans

Graphics processors just what the doctor ordered

Jim Hardwick, senior software engineer for TechniScan, a Utah technology company, shows images from a new type of breast ultrasound that enables doctors or technicians to detect breast cancer more efficiently.

Beyond just jazzing up video games, one of the growing array of applications being found for the powerful graphics-oriented chips that Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices sell is in speeding up medical imaging, which can be a lifesaving benefit.
