Fall is on the wing, and birdwatchers' spirits soar as they anticipate the arrival of migratory birds

The spring arrival of migrating birds is much ballyhooed in the old song, "When the Swallows Return to Capistrano," and in our neighborhoods by the proverbial "first robin of spring." The departure of birds from our backyards and neighborhoods in late summer and early fall, on the other hand, usually goes unheralded or unnoticed.
