Fayetteville mural to be demolished

Posted: September 3, 2009 at 10:07 a.m.

— A large mural painted along a wall of the Washington County Courthouse parking deck will be destroyed in the coming months.

Engineers have determined the parking deck is structurally unsound, and the Fayetteville Arts Council says removing the section of wall and relocating it would cost about $200,000.

The council stressed the importance of saving artwork, but member Hank Kaminsky says he sees no way to save the mural.

Named after early Arkansas settler William Lovely, the mural depicting a small-town setting was painted in 1998 by fourth-graders at St. Joseph Catholic School. Kaminsky says professional artists also worked on the piece.
