Fayetteville solid waste crews started processing and hauling the city’s trash Oct. 1, after Cherokee Nation backed out of its contract, the City Council learned Tuesday in agenda session.
Utilities Director David Jurgens will ask the council Nov. 3 to approve a long-term contract with Waste Management to deliver waste to a Tontitown landfill. City Attorney Kit Williams said he will move toward a possible lawsuit to recover damages.
In late July, Cherokee Nation expressed desire to get out of its $1.2 million a year contract, which is valid two more years. The city declined, Don Marr, chief of staff, told the council. Cherokee Nation has been losing money on its solid waste services.
