Confidence reading slides, pointing to bad Christmas for retailers

Consumers’ confidence about the U.S. economy fell unexpectedly in October as job prospects remained bleak, a private research group said Tuesday, fueling speculation that an already gloomy Christmas shopping forecast could worsen.
