October became the deadliest month for U.S. troops in the eight-year war in Afghanistan when two powerful bombs killed eight soldiers and an interpreter Tuesday in separate attacks.
The roadside attacks came a day after 14 Americans died in two helicopter crashes.
Early today, three United Nations staff members were killed at a U.N. guesthouse in Kabul, in an attack a Taliban spokesman said was meant as an assault on the forthcoming presidential elections. Kabul Police Chief Abdul Rahman said seven people were killed, including some attackers.
