Kirksey getting mixed messages from state

Despite gaining recognition and money for improved test scores, student subgroups have kept the school on the state improvement list.

Sixth-grade math teacher Karen Bradshaw helped Kyle Davison, 11, of Rogers sign in to a program during the first official day of the Excel period at Kirksey Middle School in Rogers on Wednesday. Based on last spring’s Benchmark scores, students who were proficient or lower were put in targeted classes to get extra help, while advance students were able to pick a class of their choice.

In 2007, Kirksey Middle School was named the state’s first Diamond School to Watch. It was also the school’s second year on the state’s School Improvement List. In 2009, the state announced a $78,000 award to Kirksey under the School Recognition Program for gains on the Benchmark test. That was year four on the School Improvement List. At year four, the state has the option of making staffing changes and exercising day-to-day control of the school’s improvement plan.
