Justice Clarence Thomas, who hasn’t asked an attorney a question during oral arguments before the Supreme Court since 2006, told law students at the University of Alabama that the court’s nine justices virtually always know where they stand on a case by reading legal briefs before oral arguments are presented so there’s no need for justices to “beat up” on attorneys.
