ON CHRISTIANITY

Posted: October 24, 2009 at 3:20 a.m.

— DEAR REV. GRAHAM: I’m a student from a country that has only a few Christians. I’d like to learn more about Christianity, but I’m confused because you have so many different churches here. Someone said to write you for suggestions.

- V.Z.

DEAR V.Z.: I can appreciate your confusion, also, because you’re right - we do have many churches. One reason is because most of our ancestors came from other countries and brought their own church traditions with them. But this shouldn’t disturb you; inspite of some minor differences all Christians share certain basic beliefs.

How can you learn more about the Christian faith? The Christian faith is based on the life and teachings ofJesus Christ - and that should be your starting point. The record of His life and teachings is found in the book we call the Bible, which you can get at almost any bookstore (ask for a modern translation). As you will see, the Bible is actually a collection of books, written over a period of many hundreds of years.

The first four books (called Gospels) in the section called the New Testament tell us about Jesus - and I hope you’ll study them carefully. I suggest you begin with the Gospel of John, because it was written “that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). Read it with an open heart and mind - and if you do, you won’t only learn about Jesus, but you’ll discover that God loves you and wants you to be part of His family forever.
