Official wrote memo to warn of litter’s overuse

TULSA — A former Arkansas poultry company executive is testifying about a memo he wrote in 2005 that warned of the environmental dangers of applying too much bird waste on farmland.
Monty Henderson, the former president of George’s Inc., testified Thursday that he became aware of the potential problems caused by the over-application of the phosphorous-heavy waste in the late 1990s.
His memo was in a company newsletter sent to all employees. It advised that excess litter should be hauled out of the concentrated areas where poultry is raised and said the problem needed to be solved soon.
George’s is one of 11 Arkansas poultry companies being sued by Oklahoma on claims they’re responsible for polluting the Illinois River watershed with tons of chicken waste.
The companies deny wrongdoing.
