Washington Co. coroner requests own office

FAYETTEVILLE Washington County Coroner Roger Morris is asking county officials to provide funding to build his own office.
Morris has worked out of funeral homes since becoming coroner in 2002 and says the increasing number of cases he handles has created space and timing issues. He told the county quorum court’s public works committee a 1,700-square-foot building would cost $300,000 to $350,000 dollars.
County building and grounds superintendent Ron Wood says there is enough money in the budget to pay for such a project.
Morris is to present his 2010 budget request to the court’s budget committee Tuesday but declined to say if the request will include changing from a part-time to full-time coroner.
Several county officials have said they would support moving to a full-time coroner.
