Benton County officials eye phone alert system

BENTONVILLE Justices of the peace in Benton County are considering installing a phone system that notifies county residents of bad weather or other health and safety alerts.
Jay Burchfield, business development manager, said the Roam Secure Alert Network can alert county residents in an emergency via cell or landline telephone, e-mail and other communication devices.
Burchfield said the initial cost to the county would be $100,000, and would cost the county $21,000 annually to maintain.
Some justices have expressed skepticism about the need for a comprehensive notification system, given the county’s current drive to reduce budget expenditures.
Many emergency notification systems can provide notification for situations ranging from weather alerts to school closings.
