Room to Grow : Still time to divide perennials

Fall is a fine time to divide and transplant many perennial plants, but which ones? A good rule of thumb is to transplant perennials during the season opposite of their bloom cycle. Transplant springblooming perennials in the fall and late summer /fall bloomers in the spring. Spring bloomers include astilbe, peonies, iris, bleeding hearts and many others. Later-blooming perennials like coneflowers, rudbeckia, asters, and sedum should be transplanted in the early spring.
