— BCSA to hold festival

The Benton County School of the Arts will host a music and arts festival, “Puttin’ on the Ritz,” from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 24 at the school campus, 506 W. Poplar St. in Rogers.

Musical talents will be showcased throughout the day, along with children’s art activities and an art exhibition with art sales. A silent auction will feature baskets with hotel stays and show tickets in Branson, Mo., and Eureka Springs. Lunch and baked goods will be provided for sale.

A talent competition, featuring students in grades six through 12, will take place at 1 p.m. Tickets to attend the competition are $3, with children 12 and under admitted free.

Job fair offers seminars and interviews

Northwest Arkansas Community College will present the Northwest Arkansas Fall Job Fair from noon to 7 p.m. Monday at the John Q. Hammons Center in Rogers, off Interstate 540 at exit 83. The fair, hosted by the Rogers-Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce, is open to the public and free of charge.

“Many major local employers are participating, seeking qualified applicants for positions in retail, health care, education, public safety, transportation, manufacturing, hospitality, sales and management,” said Gretchen Laffoon, vice president of member services for the Rogers-Lowell Chamber, in a press release issued by the chamber.

Laffoon suggests that applicants arrive with resumes and other information about their past job experience so they can apply for openings at the fair, the release states.

A special “Resume CPR” workshop will be offered from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Human resource and recruiting professionals fromthe Northwest Arkansas Human Resources Association will be on hand to review and critique resumes and to offer tips for improvement. Attendees should bring a printed copy of their resume and a copy on a flash drive so changes may be made on the spot. Several copies of the fresh resume will be made for attendees to take to the job fair, according to the release.

Two free job-hunting seminars titled “Getting Hired in Northwest Arkansas” will be offered at 2 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., sponsored by Cameron Smith Associates. No registration is required.

The fair includes a Job Seekers’ Lounge featuring a bank of computers allowing job seekers easy access to online applications.

Local trainer signs pet-training CD

Pet-behavior counselor Denise Holmes will be at Borders Bookstore from noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 17 to sign copies of her recently released pet-preparation program, “My New Best Friend.”

This program is designed to help parents prepare and introduce a family pet to their baby.

“My New Best Friend” is available at Borders, as well as other local retailers. The program will also be soldat a wholesale discount to animal shelters and rescues to help prevent the needless surrender of pets after the birth of a baby, and as a means of support for the organizations’ work. The Humane Society of the Ozarks will be the first organization to benefit from this offer.

Holmes owns a local petbehavior counseling service and is the training consultant at Dog Party USA. She is also a board member for the Humane Society of the Ozarks. Her Web site, www. LoveTrustTeach.com, features the product.

Pancake breakfast set for Oct. 16

The Methodist Men of the First United Methodist Church of Bella Vista will hold their semiannual pancake breakfast from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday. The churchis at 20 Boyce Drive.

The menu will be pancakes, ham or sausage, applesauce, and milk or coffee for $5.

Proceeds will be distributed to local charities.

Vendor sale for Lone Pine Ranch

A vendor sale to benefit the Lone Pine Ranch Animal Shelter in Centerton will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.Friday at the Executive Center, Suite 3, 1116 S. Walton Blvd. in Bentonville.

Sale items will include arts-andcrafts supplies, baking supplies, beach towels, clothing, kitchen items,glassware, children’s bedding, pet items, rugs and more.

Driver-safety program offered

The AARP will hold a driver-safety program from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Northeast Benton County Community Center in Garfield. The class is open to all, and membership in AARP is not necessary. The cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers. Call Pete Rathmell at 359-2689.

Benton County Democratic Women

Laura Kellams will speak to the group Oct. 26 at the Clarion Hotel and Convention Center in Bentonville.

Kellams is the northwest Arkansas director of Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families.

Operation Free bus tour in area

Military veterans will embark on a 21-state bus tour to talk to citizens and local community leaders about the dangers of climate change and its threat to national security. The tour will make a stop at 9 a.m. Tuesday on the Bentonville Square, where veterans will host a meet-andgreet with local citizens.

The tour is sponsored by Operation Free, a coalition of veterans and national security groups working together to raise public awareness of national securitythreats posed by climate change and the importance of building a clean-energy economy that is not tied to fossil fuels.

Woodcarvers of Northwest Arkansas

B&B Fund Drive

Plans for the 18th annual B&B Fund Drive and annual Christmas dinner are under way. The event will be held Dec. 25 at the Church of Christ Activity Center in Bentonville.

Helpers are needed to cook, serve and deliver meals. Pastors are welcome to speak and share prayers.

Eighteen years ago, at the first B&B Fund Drive Christmas Dinner, 57 people were served. Last year, 4,128 people were served, and 640 underprivileged childrenreceived toys.

Bentonville Kiwanis Young Professional Leaders Club

The club will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Panera Bread in Bentonville. YPL is designed for individuals who live busy lives but still desire to give back to their community. Those who are interested in the club are welcome to attend.

America Helping Heroes

The national organization dedicated to helping veterans when they come home from Afghanistan and Iraq is forming chapters nationwide, including in Arkansas.

Angela Alegna, the founder of America Helping Heroes, has spent the last year forming the organization into a national community-by-community soldier support system while penning the book “The Seven Deadly Sins We Commit Against Our Soldiers and the Road to Recovery.”

In a news release, Alegna mentions a high rate of suicide in the military, a high rate of unemployment among Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, an unprecedented wait for benefits and an increasing homeless population among former military personnel.

America Helping Heroes will launch on Nov. 10.

Children’s Hope International

This nonprofit adoption agency will present a free introduction to international adoption, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 1, hosted by a local adoptive family.

Benton County Conservation District

As part of a statewide education program, the district is offering a $250 scholarship for a local high school student, according to Ronnie McGhee, chairman of the district. As well as receiving the scholarship, the winner will be eligible to compete at the area and state levels.

The Arkansas Association of Conservation Districts awards three scholarships - $1,000, $750 and $500 - based on students’ essays and oral presentations.

The contest is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors with a minimum 2.0 grade point average who are Benton County residents and plan to follow a conservation-related course of study. Entries must be submitted by Jan. 15 to the Benton County Conservation District, 1401 N.E. McClain Road, Suite 5, Bentonville, AR 72712.
