Arne Duncan, education secretary, told prospective teachers at the University of Virginia “this country needs an army of great, new teachers,” and called education the “civil-rights issue of our generation,” adding, “if you care about promoting opportunity and reducing inequality and social injustice, the classroom is the place to start.”
