— Barkey takes on new role

Fort Smith Southside will have another receiver to worry about when it plays Springdale tonight at Jarrell Williams Bulldog Stadium in Springdale.

T.C. Barkey had a breakout game Saturday with 10 catches for 94 yards in a 50-49 loss at Fayetteville.

Barkey started the season at running back but moved to receiver with the emergence of Tyler Yager, who rushed for 166 yards and scored three touchdowns against Fayetteville.

Barkey spelled Yager on occasion last week and scored on an 8-yard run to give Springdale (2-3, 0-2 7AWest) a 49-42 lead with 1:52 to play.

“Barkey showed good hands out of the backfield and we thought he could be a pretty good receiver,” Springdale interim coach Dennis DeBusk said. “He and Yager both had great games at Fayetteville, and this is a way to get two good players on the field at the same time.”

Springdale’s challenge this week is to move past its tough loss to Fayetteville, which won on a two point conversion pass from Brandon Allen to Demetrius Dean with 10 seconds to play. Southside (4-1, 2-0) is ranked No. 3 overall, and the Rebels are coming off a 31-21 victory over Bentonville.

“Our kids have already been through a lot this season, but they’re a resilient bunch,” DeBusk said. “Putting Fayetteville behind us is not as difficult as you might think.” VAN BUREN Fast start crucial

Van Buren (1-3-1, 1-1) must get off to a better start tonight than it did last weekto have any chance against Little Rock Catholic (3-2, 0-2) at Blakemore Field.

The Pointers lost 52-20

Bryant after allowing a 79-yard touchdown on the opening kickoff. The Hornets had a 51-yard return to set up another touchdown as they extended their lead to 31-7 after one quarter.

“We’re very fragile at times, but if we can get to the fourth quarter with a chance to win, our kids will win it,” Van Buren Coach Mike Lee said. “They’ve shown they can do it.”

Tonight’s game is crucial for Catholic, which has lost consecutive 7A-Central games after beating Fort Smith Southside and Fort Smith Northside earlier this season. The Rockets are led by quarterback Taylor Bartlett and tight end Garrett Ueckman, who has orally committed to the University of Arkansas.

“You see [Ueckman] out there and he just looks like a Razorback commit,” Lee said. “He’s a big tight end, and they’ve got lots of good players where you can’t key on one person.”
