Sweet Potato Queen holds court at lunch

Steeled by her Southern upbringing and empowered by the fuchsia sequined jacket she wore, Sweet Potato Queen creator and "Boss Queen" Jill Conner Browne struggled through a speaking engagement here Wednesday, shortly after she learned her mother had died back home in Jackson, Miss.
