CRIPPLING IMMUNE DISEASE COULDN'T STOP KATIE HELMS FROM PUTTING HER FEET ON THE ROAD
Posted: October 4, 2009 at 4:14 a.m.
Katie Helms, a fitness professional employed at the University of Arkansas, was accustomed to running long-distance races before a rare auto-immune disease sapped her strength. She is working to regain her strength and endurance.
In December, Katie Helms ran a race that qualified her for the Boston Marathon. A month later, she couldn't raise her arms above her head. Crippled by an auto-immune disease, friends had to carry Helms to and from her bed. She spent most of her time in bed, sleepless, waiting for a potent drug regiment to help her regain some semblance of function. The version of Helms that now patrols the HPER Building on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville is much closer to the former version of herself. She's on the trails again, trying to get a run in every morning.
