Cardinals Set Their Sights On Tourney Final

Posted: November 30, 2009 at 4:33 a.m.

— Farmington coach Beau Thompson wants to see his team in the Bi-County Tournament finals, and not just to keep its undefeated record intact.

Thompson wants to see his 2-0 Cardinals, seeded first in the senior boys division, play and win competitive games like they did at Springdale Har-Ber last week.

“We need to win in that tournament because we need to win close games,” Thompson said. “I hope we get in the finals and play in an atmosphere like the one (at Har-Ber).”

Farmington draws a first-round bye and won’t play until 7:30 p.m. Thursday against the Lincoln-Elkins winner.

Thompson is really just looking for game experience early in the season.

“The county tournament’s always kind of our season kickoff. ... Right now we’re trying to get in as many games as possible.”

Tournament host West Fork (3-0) is seeded second and won’t play until Friday night at 7:30. The Tigers will take on the Prairie Grove-Greenland winner in the other half of the bracket.

Prairie Grove is seeded first in the senior girls division and will face the Lincoln-Greenland winner at 6 p.m. Thursday. Elkins is the No. 2 seed. The Lady Elks will open play in the tournament on Friday night at 6 against the Farmington-West Fork winner.

Lincoln and West Fork are top seeds in the junior girls and junior boys divisions.

Tournament play begins today with four games, one in each division, starting at 4 p.m.

Farmington opens the tournament taking on Elkins in the junior girls division, followed by Prairie Grove facing Lincoln in junior boys. Farmington’s senior girls then take on West Fork and Prairie Grove plays Greenland in senior boys action with a scheduled start of 8 p.m.
