Chavez Held On Capital Murder Charge

Posted: November 28, 2009 at 4:32 a.m.

Bond was set Friday at $300,000 for Aristeo Chavez Jr. of Rogers, who was being held Friday at the Benton County Jail after police arrested him in connection with capital murder, aggravated robbery and residential burglary, all felonies.

Rogers police said they responded early Wednesday to a report of a shooting at the South Wind Place Apartments at 2002 Commons Drive. Police reported finding an apartment door kicked in and Jorge Gregory Orta, 27, of Rogers lying in the living room floor with a gunshot wound to his head.

Police said their investigation led to the arrest of Chavez, who was initially charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated robbery and residential burglary.

Orta later died at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Mo., at 8:18 a.m. Thursday, according to the probable cause affidavit detailing the incident. After Orta’s death, Chavez was arrested on a charge of capital murder.

Orta’s body was taken to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory for an autopsy. The investigation is ongoing, said Cpl. Angel Murphy-Pearce, public information officer for the Rogers Police Department.
