Teachers Receive Grants for Science Instruction

Posted: November 27, 2009 at 4:44 a.m.

— Six Washington County teachers were recently selected to receive grants through the Arkansas Community Foundation’s annual Science Initiative for Middle Schools program.

The program encourages hands-on science instruction by making grants for the purchase of materials for science experiment.

Locally, the Grantmaking Committee from the Fayetteville Area Community Foundation reviewed proposals from teachers in Washington County and chose to fund six projects affecting more than 650 children this year.

The teachers came from Fayetteville, Farmington and Elkins schools.

The teachers include Brenda Kincaid, Sherri Goff, Melissa Miller, James Miller, Renata Ray and Valentina Morgan.

Applications were submitted by teachers in counties served by one of Arkansas Community Foundation’s 27 local offices, including the Fayetteville Area Community Foundation. In total, this year’s grants will fund 196 projects throughout the state, enabling 20,255 children to participate in hands-on science activities and providing 11,465 hours of instruction.

“This program is incredibly valuable to our middle school science teachers in Washington County public schools. We are so fortunate to have access to programs like this that bring new funds into our community and our schools,” said Kim Dutton, community director for the Fayetteville Area Community Foundation.

Annual funding for this program is made possible by an endowed gift from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation.
