Teen Charged In Store’s Robbery

Posted: November 26, 2009 at 4:54 a.m.

— A 17 year-old boy faces criminal charges after a robbery at a local convenience store early Wednesday morning.

Fayetteville patrol officers responded to E-Z Mart, 1950 N. Leverett, about 3:15 a.m. Wednesday after a store clerk reported being robbed by a masked male armed with a gun.

According to Fayetteville Police Sgt. Tim Franklin, the robber entered the store and showed the clerk a pistol. He demanded money and cigarettes. The clerk complied and the robber fled with about $45 and several packs of Newport cigarettes.

The suspect, described as a thin black male, approximately 5 feet, 7 inches tall with long dark hair, was reported to have been wearing a blue bandana, jeans, white shoes and dark clothing. Witnesses said they saw him running west toward the Maria H. Apartments.

“The clerk sounded the alarm and officers responded,” Franklin said. “They set up an immediate and tight perimeter. K-9 (dog) units were also deployed to search the surrounding area.”

As police searched within their perimeter, the youth, driving a car, approached an officer and asked for directions. The officer recognized his clothing as a match to the suspect description and asked him to step out of his car, police said.

“He searched the vehicle and recovered the gun, disguise and stolen property,” Franklin said.

The suspect, who’s name was not released because he’s charged as a juvenile, was arrested at the scene and transported to the Washington County Juvenile Detention Center. He faces a charge of aggravated robbery.
