Russellville Goes Inside To Slip Past Springdale

Posted: November 25, 2009 at 5:20 a.m.

When Russellville found a rhythm Tuesday night, there was nothing Springdale High could do.

The Lady Cyclones outscored Springdale by six points in the fourth quarter to beat the Lady Bulldogs 57-51 in Bulldog Gymnasium.

Russellville (2-2) pulled away late in the game by outrebounding Springdale 6-3 and getting several high-percentage shots inside the lane. The result for the Lady Cyclones was a 12-8 run to end the game that was too much for Springdale (1-1) to overcome.

A majority of that run was produced at the foul line, where Russellville made 7 of 9 shots to secure the win.

Leading Russellville on offense was junior Jaimie Long with 17 points while Ashley Regier, Amy Campbell and Kaylee Wiedower all finished with eight.

“We just kept battling down low to try and get into position for shots and they finally started falling,” first-year Russellville coach Steve Wiedower said. “Our girls are still really young, they were a little timid and as the game went on, I think we settled down.”

Springdale, which made only 30 percent (6 of 20) of its shots from the field in the first half, had trouble putting scoring runs together throughout the game or getting a necessary stop on defense.

Regardless, the Lady Bulldogs had success in the third quarter, making six shots, including five in a row, and forcing Russellville into four turnovers.

“We just couldn’t get over the hump,” Springdale coach Scotty Person said. “We had some good shots in the first half, but we couldn’t sustain that later in the game. Give Russellville some credit, they shot the ball well.”

Springdale had good production from junior post Jasmine Gilyard, who had a team-high 15 points while junior forward Tiff any Wisely and senior guard Bailey Ott both scored 11. Springdale High 70 Russellville 40

BOYS — Not a bad way to rebound.

A week after losing its season opener at Van Buren, Springdale High (1-1) responded in a big way Tuesday night with a mercy-rule victory against Russellville.

The win, which was firstyear coach Brad Stamps’ first with the Bulldogs, was spurred by a huge first half in which Springdale jumped out to a 25-point lead.

“It’s the kind of win we needed,” Stamps said. “Our kids were passionate and excite d about winning this game, and the best thing is nearly everybody contributed.”

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was T.J. Andrews with 18 points and Shelton Baird with 12.

Springdale, which had notched a combined four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter by Rahmon Taylor, Henry Hernandez, Lance Sipes and Tony Dennis, never looked back in the second half.

Brandon Turner led the Cyclones with 14 points, including four 3-pointers.
