Just Thinking I now understand a grandparent’s obsession

Posted: November 25, 2009 at 6 a.m.

— I have to admit that up until a month ago I never quite understood grandparent’s obsession with telling you about their grandkids. You know what I mean, their breaking out countless pictures and really believing you want to see all of them. Telling you story after story of cute things they’ve said or have done.

And I will say that new grandparents are by far the worst. I know because now I “are one.” You see I didn’t get it. I didn’t get it, but now I have seen the light, I am no longer wondering in ignorance. I confess that I am actually thinking about getting one of those “ask me about my grandbaby” stickers for the car. And my church, they are so patient and loving. My new grandbaby is about six weeks old and I have already managed to work stories about her in to my sermons three or four times. Oh, little did I realize all the new illustrations I would get out of this deal!

For instance, this last week my daughter called to tell my wife and I that she had just taken our grandbaby to the doctor for her one month checkup and we received the most wondrous news! She gained two and one half pounds! We rejoiced the rest of the evening, it made our day! Here’s why - you see babies are supposed to grow and so that news told us that she is doing what she should do.

It was evidence that she is healthy and already on her way to becoming whatGod has designed her to be!

Growth is evidence of health and life!

As I think about it, it is kind of interesting that a person who comes to a relationship with Almighty God through placing their faith in Jesus the Christ as their Lord and Savior, which by the way is the only way to have a relationship with God, is compared to an infant. Born again into a family that will transcend the confines of this world, and guess what, growth is part of this new life.

God wants us to grow up and mature into the fullness of what it means to be a Christian. And spiritual growth in our lives reveals spiritual health and life. The Bible speaks of the importance for the new babe in Christ maturing, “attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” Ephesians 4:15b.

So how are you doing? Are you growing in your faith life in such a way that it causes your Heavenly Father to celebrate?
