Nancy Feroe of the Benton County Historical Preservation Commission, will speak on the Trail of Tears at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area Visitor Center.

The Trail of Tears was the relocation and movement of Native Americans, including many members of the Cherokee, Creek, Seminole and Choctaw tribes from their homelands in the eastern United States to Indian Territory, present-day Oklahoma.

Feroe will focus on the northern removal route and the existing roads in Benton County that were followed by removal parties at the time of the exodus to Indian Territory. The route followed the old Springfield to Fayetteville Road that was used by the Butterfield Stage Line, later called the Old Wire Road, and part of what is now U.S. 62.

Feroe’s program is presented by Friends of Hobbs and is open to the public.

Greetings from New York,

I am interested in the details of this part of American History and in the specific route taken by the Cherokee and what is left of it that is know.

Will there be any way to obtain a recording or minutes of this event from Friends of Hobbs or the speaker?

Sincerely,
