Fayetteville Woodland Wins Cat Classic

Posted: November 22, 2009 at 4:14 a.m.

— Fayetteville Woodland went deep into its bench early, scored 24 unanswered points Saturday and beat Bentonville Gold 52-26 in the boys’ championship game of the sixth annual Bentonville Cat Classic.

Down 7-2, Woodland held Gold scoreless for nearly 7 minutes over the first and second quarters to stretch its lead to 26-7 on Cameron’s Paschke’s layup with 2:32 left in the half.

“We have a lot of depth this year, and that’s something that’s going to help us,” Woodland coach Jeff Boogaart said. “We’re pretty athletic and today we got into the passing lanes and did a good job on the defensive boards.”

Woodland subbed its entire first unit 3 minutes into the game. Its subs, led by 6-foot-7 post Tyler McCullough’s scoring and rebounding, pitched in 12 of the team’s 28 first-half points.

Caleb Waitsman scored six of his 10 points for Woodland (3-0) during the 24-0 spree. McCullough and Jawan Smith had six of its eight points in the first half. Austin Haggard scored 10 for Gold (2-1). He hit a couple of 3-pointers and helped Gold to an early 5-2 lead.

Gold coach John Mackey said his team was short-handed Saturday.

“We like to get up and down and press a little bit,” he said. “I didn’t feel like we had the manpower. We did it for a while and we got a little gassed, so I was trying to slow it down.”

He said his team would benefit from the adversity of trailing 28-11 at the half.

“We haven’t faced adversity like that,” he said. “This will make us better for when we get into conference.”

Nate Gneiting ended Woodland’s scoring streak, scoring for Gold on an inbounds play to cut the lead to 26-9 with 2:12 left in the half. Woodland had 10 different players score points, including seven each from Paschke and Andrew Pinter. McCullough has 13 rebounds.

In the third-place game, Fort Smith Kimmons beat Bentonville Black 52-45 in overtime. Kimmons entered the fourth quarter with a 32-23 lead that Black chipped away at and tied at 41.

Gherrold Kimbrew had 17 points to lead Kimmons. Nick Smith led Black with 18.

Fayetteville Woodland 43, Fort Smith Ramsey 28

GIRLS — Deanna Rudasill scored 11 points Saturday, and Fayetteville Woodland bolted to an early lead en route to taking a victory over Fort Smith Ramsey in the girls’ championship game.

Woodland extended a 10-7 lead after one quarter into a 21-13 lead at the half. It outscored Ramsey 14-9 for a 35-22 cushion entering the fourth quarter. Kelly White led Ramsey and all scorers with 12 points.

In the third place game, Fort Smith Kimmons held off Bentonville Black down the stretch for a 45-43 victory.
