NWA Mall B. Dalton Closing in January

Posted: November 22, 2009 at 3:57 a.m.

— B. Dalton Booksellers in January is closing the doors on its location in the Northwest Arkansas Mall in Fayetteville.

The move is part of a strategic plan by B. Dalton’s owner, Barnes & Noble Inc., which purchased the chain in 1987 from Dayton Hudson Corp.

“We are closing 50 remaining B. Dalton stores by the end of January 2010. These are small-format, low-volume stores in malls and their leases are expiring,” Carolyn Brown, Barnes & Noble director of corporate communications, wrote in an e-mail.

She said Barnes & Noble has closed 35 to 40 B. Dalton stores each year for the past eight years as leases expire.

“We are still very committed to the mall business,” Brown stated. “About 75 percent of our new Barnes & Noble stores are in malls.”

Jeff Bishop, Northwest Arkansas Mall senior property manager, declined to comment on the store’s closing.

Barnes & Noble has a store along North College Avenue in Fayetteville, across the street from the mall; and in Scottsdale Center in Rogers.
